At the Platinum Corral at 6:30 am before the 109 mile race!(yes, she is tired already!)
We raced El Tour de Tucson last weekend, the 109 mile route! It was the second largest El Tour event ever, with 8,647 riders total! What a thrilling experience, to ride with that many other people at the same time, including many pros. It was awesome. We were both very excited to do this, especially Jesse, who was finally getting his birthday gift (the race itself). However, we both went into it very tired and run down.
We started out in the lead groups, but by mile 47 Kelly had torn through an inch of her rear tire with some debris from the road. The tires were new, so it was a major disappointment. She tried to patch it with a temporary boot, but only made it another 3 miels before it blew again. She was starting to hit a physical wall about that point, and with the tire blowing twice, she couldn't finish. She was very tired, and sorely dissapointed!
Jesse however raced very well up through the 50 mile mark as well, before he hit a physical wall and bonked pretty hard. He was able to finish the race, but it was very painful for both us! We were glad to be done, and we both had very sick stomachs for the rest of the day. Here are some pics from the event! We are whooped.
